FAQs

  • The CranioSacral system consists of the bones in your head (cranium), the sacrum bone (at the base of the spine) the spinal cord, membranes and cerebrospinal fluid that surrounds and protects the brain and spinal cord. CranioSacral therapy focuses on optimising the position, fluid movement ('wave') and energy (piezoelectric charge and chi) of these parts of the CranioSacral system, allowing it to flow freely through the head, spine and pelvis (although not limited to those areas) and unwind pain or restrictions in the body. As the body’s healing potential is reawakened, insights into what is troubling you and what is needed to regain balance typically arise.

CranioSacral Work evolved from Cranial Osteopathy, a specialisation of the osteopathic profession that was introduced to the world in the 1930s by an American osteopath and visionary, William Garner Sutherland, after his mentorship with Dr. Andrew Taylor Still, who is considered the father of osteopathy and osteopathic medicine. I studied with Scottish Osteopath, Hugh Milne, in the lineage of Dr. Robert Fulford, a protégé of Dr. Sutherland. Hugh Milne is the creator of Visionary CranioSacral Work, international teacher and author of three books.

  • Visionary CranioSacral work is the same as CranioSacral but the practitioner is using additional perceptions to treat the body. A Visionary CranioSacral worker will be tuning into metaphysical perceptions that are imperceptible to the five standard senses; such as: clairaudience (hearing), clairvoyance (seeing), clairsentience (feeling) and claircognizance (knowing) as well as others, specific to this training.

  • Anything from subtle shifts in your body, blood, tissue to awareness, awakenings in the mind and consciousness to big shifts such as a dramatic change in migraine or pain relief.

A session can feel like a guided meditation or a journey through your organs. Some people access information from deep, multidimensional levels of consciousness or simply work with what’s here right now… anything is possible.

  • I'll take you through a relaxation technique and from there you might get an idea of how your body is feeling and where you might want to begin. If not, we will walk through your body together - bringing our awareness to areas of sensation, pain, discomfort or stuck emotion. Together, we may attend to body issues, perceptions about life situations, boundary needs or some other issue you want to address.

  • If possible, loose, comfortable clothing that doesn’t restrict the body at all. Most clothing is fine. Jeans are a bit too restrictive.

  • Before the session it’s a good idea to be well hydrated. Have a blanket nearby in case you feel cold and perhaps a glass of water too. Have by your side anything you think you might need to feel comfortable so that you don’t have to leave during the session to get it. You don’t have to write anything down. If there is something specific that arises that you want to remember I will write it down for you

  • Ideally the session is done in a quiet, private space such as your bedroom, office or living room or any space where there will be no interruptions and you feel safe and warm. If, however, you need a session and are only able to be outside or in a car then healing is still possible. Using headphones helps to concentrate and block out background noise.

  • Absolutely. Especially if you are working from home or a private office. I do not recommend doing this in an open office situation. Having a session during the day will inform you of what needs to be looked at and changed. This may be beneficial to your work and help you in making decisions and encourage you in what needs doing next.

  • I encourage you to open to whatever comes into your awareness, trusting that it is what you might need in that moment. As we move forward this process will get more familiar to you. Not feeling anything at all may be an awareness of blank spaces in the body. Areas that just need more time and attention. Other times the experiences may temporarily feel uncomfortable, like body tension or emotional unease, until you get more clarity in that session.

  • We may talk for a few minutes about what is needed next and how to move forward. Sometimes I advise people to stay where they are for as long as possible and allow the nervous system to integrate the changes that have occurred.

As with all modalities that are working to resolve personal issues, physical or emotional, you will need some time to process. Sometimes the effects of a session may feel they have immediately impacted you and sometimes you feel different in 24 to 48 hours. Just give yourself time to process and reflect. Be in nature, interact less, talk less, go slowly for a few days.
